Strangest thing about Skype to me is that the video calls within Thailand are often not great, but to and from Thailand are awesome. I also use Skype for an occasional international toll call and I'm still not under $9. I threw $10 on Skype and now these calls go right through and as far as I can tell they are still free. The banks even offered collect calling but I still could not get past my cell robot operator. I kept trying to call 800 numbers (mostly banks) in the states with no success from my cell. Good for sending very cheap texts abroad too.

Just comes up as a random Skype number or 'unknown'. You can use it in Thailand for pennies and it won't show your name or any number. I have found this very handy when needing to speak to someone at length in UK. The calls are dirt cheap and your $10 lasts a very long time. When installed buy yourself $10 of Skype time in case you need to call a land line or mobile. With Skype I can have multiple accounts on my PC, all opened at the same time. I would dump Skype, now that Microsoft owns it, in favour of Viber, except a Viber account is tied to your mobile therefore, unlike Skype, you can only have one account, unless you have two mobiles. They seem to be trying to take more control. I also like to keep all my accounts separate, I hate, that by default, Microsoft wants to link them all together without giving the user an option to opt out. for simplicity reason, I didn't do neither of these. Last but not the least, you have a choice of linking your individual Skype account with Microsoft account, also you could link your Skype account with your Outlook address book. for example, if someone pushes a picture to you, you are not able to see it on the Skype app or someone leaves a voice message, and you are not able to pick it up from the Skype app. the Skype metro app doesn't have the complete functions as the desktop application.

If you don't want to create a Microsoft account, download the Skype desktop application from, then you could create an individual Skype account.

The Skype app ( modern Windows, or metro ), there is only one way of creating a new Skype account - by creating a Microsoft account, by default.
