The original KOTOR, and its sequel, never made it to PlayStation consoles, and was an exclusive of the original Xbox console line-up. It’s worth noting that it’s quite the coup for Sony here, too. It's also handled various other ports for Star Wars games on modern consoles. This studio has been responsible for the multiple platform ports and re-releases the original game has received over the intervening years since its first release. Those worried about the changing hands of development should be able to rest easy though: if any team knows KOTOR as well as BioWare, it’s Aspyr. Instead, that honor goes to the team at Aspyr. The Knights of the Old Republic Remake is not, however, being handled by its original developers at BioWare. The trailer, seen below, has the voice of Bastilla Shan who was one of the recruitable characters in the Bioware epic and shows off the key character, Darth Revan. Without naming KOTOR or the two developers, it confirmed during an earnings call (opens in new tab) in August that a “AAA project” had “transitioned to another studio”.
Now, Embracer Group has confirmed that Bloomberg's report may indeed be true. We may see this swap to a different development team, too, as Bloomberg reports some Aspyr employees believe Saber Interactive - who's also under the Embracer Group with Aspyr - may eventually take over development. Reportedly, design director Brad Prince and art director Jason Minor were subsequently fired from the project and the game's now looking at a 2025 timeframe. Allegedly, this did not go down well with Sony and Lucasfilm, who expected a higher quality build. According to a recent Bloomberg (opens in new tab) report, the team at Apsyr are facing potential issues after creating a vertical slice demo, demonstrating the game's major features. Unfortunately, it appears that the next Star Wars RPG has been delayed.
